A List of Movies About Coffee You Must Watch

Updated: Feb 19

A really beautiful part of the coffee community is to get inspired by other professionals in the industry. Some of us get inspired by our preferred barista, our friends, or our colleagues at work, and some of us get inspired by movies. Whether or not movies thrill you, here's a list of 6 movies about coffee you must watch. Enjoy!

There are amazing movies about coffee that take you inside the world of the professionals, showing the hard work and dedication behind the scene. There are many ways to learn and get inspired in what you do, and movies might also play a role in that. I think this is a beautiful way and opportunity to see more of the World of Coffee and our community, so for that reason, I created this list. Movies about coffee show us things from a different angle and many times deliver us insights we'd never see anywhere else, like how does it look like to be a competing barista, what are the stresses, goals, and opportunity in doing that, or how does it look like to grow coffee, what difficulties and obstacles are there for a farmer, and ultimately what does it take to produce specialty coffee?

In these movies, we get to hear the top coffee professionals we know today in the world, like James Freeman, the owner of Blue Bottle Coffee in the USA, or Micheal Phillips (2010 world barista Champion), Agnieszka Rojewska the first female World Barista Champion, Sasa Sestic a former World Barista Champion, green coffee buyers, importers, roasters and more. To get to hear their opinion and points of view is many times eye-opening!

A Film About Coffee

These movies, besides the fact that they are beautiful, they're informative. They take us inside the core of the industry, and that's why they inspire us.

We can all find something to learn from watching these movies, even to gain a chill night with our friend/s, life partners. or any other group of people you'd like is a win. I also guess that for those who sometimes struggle with reading, watching a movie about coffee is a great option!

All the movies I listed below are available online, sometimes for free and sometimes for a symbolic payment of a few bucks. So here's the list that, in my opinion, is really worth watching, each with a link to their trailer or website. All there's left to do is enjoy!

 1. Coffee Heroes (2020) NEW!

The 'Coffee Heroes' film follows outwardly calm Polish barista, Agnieszka Rojewska and her pursuit of becoming the first female World Barista Champion. She forms an unlikely partnership with former World Barista Champion, Sasa Sestic, as he travels with and coaches her in the lead up to the world competition.

Along with a team of coffee professionals, Agnieszka and Sasa travel to remote coffee forests in Ethiopia on a wild, off the beaten track adventure in search of the ‘perfect’ coffee to take to the World Championship in Amsterdam.

 2. A film About coffee (2014)

The movie is a love letter to, and meditation on, specialty coffee. It examines what it takes, and what it means, for coffee to be defined as “specialty.” The film whisks audiences on a trip around the world, from farms in Honduras and Rwanda to coffee shops in Tokyo, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. Through the eyes and experiences of farmers and baristas, the film offers a unique overview of all the elements—the processes, preferences, and preparations; traditions old and new—that come together to create the best cups. This is a film that bridges gaps both intellectual and geographical, evoking flavor and pleasure, and providing both as well.

 3. Barista (2015)

The film follows five baristas, as they prepare for the 2013 United States Barista Championship. As a viewer, you are introduced into the elevation of the everyday drink, into a craft culture not unlike that of beer and wine.

 4. Baristas (2019)

This is the follow up to the hit documentary "Barista" (above) features four National Barista champions from around the globe who represent their countries and their craft in an attempt to win the World Barista Championship in Seoul, South Korea.

 5. Black Gold (2006)

An award-winning Sundance-hit which changed the way millions of people drink coffee, Black Gold tells the story of Tadesse Meskela and his struggle to keep his 74,000 Ethiopian coffee farmers from Western exploitation. Black Gold exposes the truth behind each cappuccino and demands each and every one of us to wake up and smell the coffee.

 6. Into The Coffee (short film)

The film is about a woman barista in Indonesia, Della Mifti. The movie is showing the world how important it is to be passionate and dedicated in the coffee industry and as a barista, because it is not just a coffee making job, it is more like a role.
